The aim of the workshop is to discuss the state of the art of research into the indoor microbiome, dampness and health in homes. In principle, the results will be reported in a review to be published in the European Respiratory Journal

Respiratory disease in relation to home indoor microbial exposures, home dampness and energy conservation were addressed. In 2009, WHO published its “WHO guidelines for indoor air quality: dampness and mould”.

Dampness and mould in buildings have been a persistent and well-recognised health problem for decades. With the introduction of energy efficiency measures (because of climate change policies), this problem may get bigger rather than smaller. Recent years have seen large advances in unravelling the ‘microbiome’ of the human body and the indoor home environment.

These advances have opened up new venues for research into, ultimately, options for preventing dampness- and mould-related disease in buildings. Indeed, the word ‘microbiome’ does not occur in the aforementioned WHO report.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss the state of the art of research into the indoor microbiome, dampness and health in homes. In principle, the results will be reported in a review to be published in the European Respiratory Journal. Workshop participants will be expected to play an active role in putting together the workshop report.
