Biography

Qualifications: MMedSc (KwaZulu-Natal)

Kareshma joined the University of Natal, Medical School in Jan 1999 as an In -service trainee at the Department of Microbiology. She obtained her National Diploma in Biotechnology at ML Sultan Technikon at the end of 1999. In 2001 she completed her BMed Sci Hons at UKZN with majors in Microbiology and Molecular Biology. She is currently doing her Masters in Medical Sciences entitled ‘Genetic basis of Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome in Indian and Black children in South Africa’. Kareshma has worked on several research projects including WHO driven trials. She is employed with us as a Research Manager overseeing all environmental projects within the department. She is currently heading up the ‘BIRTH COHORT’ study in the Department. Kareshma has received grants from the following funders for her masters project: Medical Research Council 2006, National Research Foundation 2006, David Hepburn Award 2006, National Kidney Foundation 2007

Biography

Qualifications: BMedSc (Hons), MMedSc (KwaZulu-Natal)

Mr Ngcobo obtained a degree in Biomedical sciences (2004)- Victor Diaz scholarship in 1st Obtained Honours degree in medical science (Medical Biochemistry) (2005)- National Research Foundation scarce skills scholarship (25000). Did research in mycotoxins and their effects on the immune system Masters degree in medical science (Medical Biochemistry) (2009)- National Research Foundation scarce skills scholarship (33000), Lifelab merit bursary (50000). Did research on the effects of Sutherlandia frutescens (traditional medicine plant) on the immune system, HIV, and cancer cells. Mlungisi is currently employed as research assistant to Prof Nceba Gqaleni doing traditional medicine research.

Biography

Qualifications: NDip. Mass Communications (NUL), BSocSci (KwaZulu-Natal), BA (Hons) (KwaZulu-Natal)

Pusetso is the Projects Coordinator for the Fogarty International Centre for Southern Africa, Millennium Promise Program, based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is currently reading for a Master of Social Sciences degree in Public Health and Development Communication (UKZN). Her research interest is on the use of Entertainment Education and the mass media for HIV/AIDS prevention, as well as the use of mass media for social development and behaviour change.

Biography

Qualifications: BA (Hons) Politics (KwaZulu-Natal)

Samantha Khan has been working in the labour movement for more than ten years. Her adult education and trade union experience began at the Workers College in Durban where she was the Programme Coordinator for the joint accredited diploma programme with UKZN. Thereafter, she relocated to Johannesburg to work for the International Metalworkers Federation as the Assistant Regional Representative responsible for Education in the Africa Region. She also did a stint at the Chemical Workers’ Union, CEPPWAWU as the Head of Education. Currently, Samantha is responsible for the worker education programme at DOEH with respect to health and safety at the workplace. Her task is to facilitate programmes and network with organised labour for strategic projects around health and safety for workers. Samantha is currently working on a project for  health and safety worker education in the chemical sector.
